About the course:
This course is designed to support people who wish to use the Early Childhood Quality Rating Scale- Emergent Curriculum for their own self-assessment, for audit/inspection and/or for research. It includes discussions of: the research base; effective early years pedagogy, including relational and intentional pedagogy; essential elements of child development knowledge; current research on and strategies which support children’s learning in the curricular areas of language and emergent literacy, emergent mathematics and emergent science as well as support for diversity and inclusion; the technicalities of becoming familiar with and using the scale. The first part of the course supports familiarisation of and use of the scale, while the second considers reliability in rating.
For research and audit purposes, ‘gold standard’ status is recommended. While this course provides the foundation for this, to achieve ‘gold standard’ a small amount of additional training and assessment would be required (Please contact www.birthtosevenmatters.co.uk).
Please Note: The course and associated materials are for personal and setting/school-based use only.

What we offer
This is a two-part course for those who wish to become reliable with the ECQRS-EC (2025). It is possible to complete part-one of the course only, this is for people who intend to use ECQRS-EC within their own centre for self-development and who do not wish to make any comparisons with anyone else, centre or the research base.
ECQRS-EC (2025). Part one: familiarisation – this familiarisation training is organised into 10 separate parts: 10 video presentations which are pre-recorded and available online, timing to suit participants. Video presentations can be watched at times convenient to participants and can be revisited for at least one year after registration. ECQRS-EC (2025) familiarity training is approximately fifteen hours in length, it includes activities to be completed in participants’ own time. In addition, at least one observational use of the ECQRS-EC is recommended to support the process
ECQRS-EC (2025). Part two: reliability – The second part of the course (looking at reliability) is optional, but recommended for those using ECQRS-EC for research, as an audit tool, making comparisons between centres/educators or aligning their own centre’s results with the research literature. It consists of two online video presentations, one online zoom session and a set of activities to complete. The experience of this part of the course is greatly enhanced by familiarity with the ECQRS-EC (2025) e.g. having used it in its entirety on at least three separate occasions. Part two: Reliability with the ECQRS-EC (2025) is approximately five hours in length, with the additional expectation of at least three observational uses of the entire ECQRS-EC (2025).
Both parts of the course are accompanied by work books and there are final certificates for part one and part two of the course.
